Filters

This first picture I took right when I woke up... I obviously have no makeup on, my eyes and face are a little puffy from the allergies I have and my skin is a little blotchy from being out in the sun the previous day. I took that picture and softened my skin, brightened my teeth, covered up the scars I have from various accidents, got rid of the blotches and puffy eyes/face and switched the filter and I can look how I want to look. Isn't that what life has turned into is now... Having people see you how you want them to see you, what you want them to think you have and what you want them to think you do. Today it has turned into being all about the 'likes', 'comments', 'followers' and 'friends' you have. With the right filter you can show people the seemingly perfect batch of cookies you made and they will never know that 3 out of 4 of the cookies came out burnt. With the right filter you can show people the carefree and wonderful life you live without showing any of the blemishes that you have as well.

Don't get me wrong I hate constantly seeing negative on social media since we typically see enough of it on the news and in every day life but when did it become more socially acceptable to filter out the real in life and to only show the unrealistic perfect. Out of the two pictures I obviously love the second one more; but it's not real, it's not me. It seems like more and more we are feeling guilty we can't compete with other people's filters and we forget that isn't the 'real' them either.

Someone told me this weekend they thought it was great that Boston and I always had so much fun and I realized I am guilty of using a filter, too. Last Monday the most exciting thing we did was buy a new comforter for my bed (really, I'm actually super happy about that comforter). On the social media standard than wasn't exciting enough so I filtered that out. Myself, along with so many others, use the filters as a subjective emotional bandage to make our selves feel better for any shortcomings we have.

Filters can be good and they can be useful but they aren't always true and they most likely aren't always real. It would be insane to try to always compete with other people's filtered moments. For everyone one good picture we take their are ten before that didn't turn out as well; don't compare your ten bad pictures to a persons one amazing picture. Sometimes it's nice to just be real... No filters, not alterations, no add-ons. I am Ashlynn, I have puffy eyes sometimes, my hair is a mess a lot, I curse more than I should, sometimes my child throws huge fits and our days are clearly not always easy. Without a filter our life isn't the prettiest but it's real.
