Unless you are living under a rock you heard the news about Robin Williams death. Although, I wish this much attention was given by the general public when American hero's serving our country died as they do to a beloved American actor it is still sad none the less. What I hope is that this helps spread some light on depression and mental health awareness. Depression is real. Just because it is not an illness that is physically visible does not mean it doesn't exist, depression is a chemical imbalance. Robin Williams was proclaimed as one of the funniest men in the world, he made millions laugh and smile and he was still struggling with depression. I feel like for so long mental illness has been something that is taboo; it gets swept under the rug and is something people who struggle with it are forced to be ashamed of. I heard of a murder/suicide that was not too long ago. I am heartbroken for the victims and their families but it is also so devastating to think the man responsible was so sad, alone, scared and depressed that he thought that death was more inviting of an option than life.
I have had depressing things happen in my life, I have been depressed at moments but I don't have depression. Their is a large difference. You can't just "try to take your mind off of it" or "get over it". I hope if anything this happening helps to wake people up to this issue and that those suffering can get the help the need. Be inspired by Robin Williams life, his talents to bring smiles and happiness to so many, but also be educated because of his death.
