In the 1950's Elvis came out singing about scandalous things and shaking his hips way too much for the time. Parents thought it was bad, while the younger generation loved it and it slowly became acceptable. Throughout the years it kept getting a little bit worse. In the 80's She's my Cherry Pie was a huge hit (I know what it means now... Didnt then), along with other songs that were on the edge for the time with their hidden meanings. The 90's brought us a bit more "risqué" songs, lyrics and pop-stars. Britney Spears came next and I remember what a big shock it was when she performed with a snake at the VMA's. Now we fast forward ten years to last night... Miss Miley Cyrus...
I am not a rolemodel, I have never claimed to be, I don't dress how most moms do, I have a tattoo, I had Boston unmarried and I typically don't judge. I have done crazy things that would really surprise you... But when I did anything "crazy" I wasn't doing them in front of the world, in front of a million young fans that look up to me. I love Elvis, I love 80's bands, and even when she had a rough patch I have always loved B. Spears, but if how Miley acted last last night is something that my Boston will want to emulate I am so worried.
I brought up the frog issue because that is what has happened to our society; we weren't thrown into the boiling water but rather our lukewarm water has gotten hotter over time. Can you imagine if a girl during Elvis's time did what she did last night... People, even the younger people, would have been disgusted. Instead we have slowly gotten to the boiling water where things like that are acceptable.
Maybe it's changed for me since I have become a mom... Maybe when I was younger my own mom was worried about my obsession with The Spice Girls. But seeing five girls from Europe wearing high shoes, short dresses and singing about "girl power" seems so much less harmful than singing about different drugs and "twerking" on a married man, (not to mention whatever she did with that foam hand), even the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and his family were disgusted.
Once again, I am not a "prude" in the least bit, but Miley, come on girl, have some respect. I am worried that the water we have all been in is finally boiling; and I am so worried about what my daughter will grow up with.

Hate me if I am wrong, hate me ten times..but is this someone you want your children to want to be like?....
You my dear girl are what I want my daughters to want to have for a rolemodel.
ReplyDeleteYou are very smart, kind, funny, humble and someone who has learned from mistakes. I'm glad you posted this so your younger readers can see that you don't think Miley is "cool". Keep doing what you are doing, Boston is so lucky to have you as a mother! The values you are instiling her are worth millions. I'm glad to see people like you... Young "hip" moms that speak their mind and yet still stand for what is right!
Blessing to both you and your adorable baby,
Shelia from California
Finally a girl who is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside! Loved this post! Thank you for standing up for your beliefs Without being mean...'we will know who us readers relate Miley to now.. Lol
