Half Empty or Half Full

The other day I was in a meeting and we all got asked the standard/over-used question if the glass is half full or half empty.... I listed to everyone's answers around the room when it was finally my turn. I am probably the queen of over-thinking and this was not the exception... I told them before I could answer that question I would need to know a few things about the glass...

•What was in it? How many calories were in it? If it was just water did it have flavor added to it? How long had it been sitting out? Was ice added to it because if their was that would obviously add to how full or empty it was? What kind of glass was it in? Was it a fancy crystal cup or a red solo cup? Who had poured whatever was in it in there? Did they do it to be kind? Did they do it out of pity, did they do it out habit or were they forced to? Did someone drink out of this glass already? Had this glass been empty for a long time? If so then it's wonderful that it even has water! Or has this glass never been below a certain point?

After I went through every question I could about the glass everyone stared at me blankly... (Which is completely understandably)... I went on to explain to them that their are a lot if circumstances surrounding the glass and it's current state of being with half full or half empty and that it would be unfair of us to judge it just by our first glance of it. Our own personal experiences end up adding so much to our perception of the glass.

If my over-thinking and this metaphorical rambling of mine didn't make sense to you at least you will have something pop up in your head the next time someone asks you the half empty/half full question.
